Brno University of Technology is the oldest Czech university in Brno, the largest technical university in the country in terms of student numbers. It has 8 faculties (Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering and Communication, Business and Management, Information Technology, Chemistry, Architecture and Fine Arts). In total there are more than 19 thousand students.
The study in the field of optics is provided by the following programs: Precise Mechanics and Optics (optical design, principles and design of optical instruments, micro and nanomechanical systems, biophotonics, laser spectroscopy, applications), and Physical Engineering and Nanotechnology (applied physics with the optional optical specialization).
An important part of BUT is the Central European Institute of Technology (CEITEC BUT), through which BUT is incorporated into the CEITEC center of excellence, consisting of four Brno universities and two institutes of the Academy of Sciences. CEITEC BUT brings together 16 top research groups.
Excellent optical and related research at BUT takes place mainly in the following three research groups at CEITEC:
Experimental Biophotonics
Advanced light microscopy R&D (especially holographic incoherent quantitative phase imaging and its applications in cell biology, cancer research and for observation of phase effects of metasurfaces).
Materials Characterization and Advanced Coatings
Laser Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy (LIBS)
Fabrication and Characterisation of Nanostructures
Fabrication and characterization of nanostructures (including plasma and dielectric meta-surfaces for optical beam transformation)
