The LasApp project wants to effectively support lasers and thus the technological development of the Czech Republic. Regarding fiber lasers, the Institute of Photonics and Electronics of the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic (ÚFE of the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic), which coordinates the entire project, has been considered a national center of scientific competence for over thirty years.
The inventions of fiber and thin-disk lasers are changing the world of laser applications. The ambition of the project LasApp: Breakthrough laser technologies for smart production, space and biotechnological applications is to gain a technological lead for the Czech Republic. Fiber and thin-disk lasers complement each other to a large extent. While fiber lasers have the advantage of high average power, are currently the most powerful lasers ever and are highly popular mainly in engineering due to their low maintenance, thin disk lasers dominate wherever high-energy pulses are needed, e.g. in laser tapping of surfaces for the refinement of materials in energy or aviation.
